Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountains

Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountains

Beautiful and unspoilt area, part of the rugged Cambrian Mountains

The Elan Valley in Wales is an unspoilt and beautiful area in the Cambrian Mountains, well know for its magnificent dams and reservoirs to create a wonderful and unique landscape. The valley is a haven for wildlife, with the Red Kites circling around Rhayader and a huge variety of other wildlife around the whole area.

The reservoirs were actually built a hundred years ago to supply water to Birmingham via a 73 mile long aqueduct.

There are six dams in the Elan Valley:

  • Craig Goch

  • Garreg Ddu

  • Pen y Garreg

  • Caban Coch

  • Claerwen

  • Dol y Mynach

The Elan Estate spans 180 square kilometres and there are 12 separate Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) The Estate has also been awarded an International Dark Sky Park award and provides an excellent location for astrophotography enthusiasts.

The Elan Valley achieved International Dark Sky Park status back in 2015. This means that the 45000 acres of Elan Valley are now protected against light pollution and makes it an ideal location for star gazing or astrophotography.
